Have no idea if this is real or not but have spent a few decades relic hunting on 18th Century sites. The majority of the 1700s silver coins I have dug are still as bright and shiny as the day they were lost. Once exposed to the air they start to darken over time. In fact I can't think of any I dug that were tarnished.
