You understood perfectly, Gaspare. Rückwärtiges Heeresgebiet Mitte (Army Group Centre Rear Area) was one of three military groups positioned in Russia behind the frontline, often collaborating with the SS-Einsatzgruppen. There were Nord, Mitte and Süd groups. Their 'official' function was to provide security behind the fighting troops. In reality, they oversaw widespread brutality, terror and mass murder. Nasty!

Good old Wikipedia. I can't find the significance of 'Beth' though. I wonder if it's a place, or perhaps an abbreviation?
