Ever since I bought J. Anthony Carter's book, I wanted the the # 8718 Saufanger in the 1912 August Stukenbrok advertisement on page 524. I later realized that all the Hirschfangers and Saufangers listed on the 1912 August Stukenbrok advertisement were made by Carl Eickhorn. When I saw this "Antique Early 20th Century massive and heavy hunting Bowie knife" listed on eBay for $650.00 buy it now, I hesitated and called my friend, Mr. Kaeshammer of Germany. I thought maybe it had too much wear for the hefty price. Mr. Kaeshammer said: "This is a high-quality knife with signs of use that are normal, and I should buy it".
Some collectors on this site may call this example a "Beater" or a "Placeholder" because of the condition however, I have no regrets.
This Saufanger is listed as Nr. 791 in the Carl Eickhorn catalog. This Saufanger is listed in the 1912 August Stukenbrok catalog as "# 8718, Saufanger, extra kraftig, mit 30mm breiter und 24cm langer Klinge, Lederscheide, in Stahl brauniert".
