So I found this Dagger at a local junk shop and picked it up for $5 not knowing anything. (" oh look, a blade. I like sharp pointy things")
I am not a collector (yet), but would hate to be the guy who ruined something of historical value by trying to make it pretty. That being said I don't think I can do any more damage to this peice than it already has had happen. And i have no clue on authenticity.
It is missing the grip and emblems and looks like it was left in the oil filled bottom of a mechanics tool box. The blade is covered in a dark oil/tar. Any of the original finish on the gaurd and pommel are just about gone. The scabbard has a lot of foreign material stuck to it and flaking off.

I am looking for advice on? ... (Yes to all)
Do these pieces hold any value I should be concerned about ruining?
If not, cleaning/ repair/ refinishing/ locating inexpensive grip?
Thanks
Tim
