80 years ago today US Marines landed on Guadalcanal in the southeast Solomon Islands. Initially unopposed, there was vicious fighting until the Japanese withdrew in early February 1943.
Subject of many books and and some movies it began the long island-hopping path through the pacific that ended in Japan's surrender.
If anyone want to read an interesting fiction series that featured a lot of Guadalcanal action, search for WEB Griffin's series titled The Corps
