Although this item has changed hands numerous times over the years, an owner of a stolen item can’t obtain clear title. It would seem the owner with clear title was the museum.

The question is would the museum be willing to go thorough all the hassles to possibly regain the sword?

The reason I say this is I became aware of a piece shown in at least one reference book which was reported to have been stolen from the collection of Julian Milestone when he was still alive. I inquired a bit further to find out that Mr. Milestone’s heirs sold off his collection and wanted nothing to do with those items. In that case, searching out the legal owners would have done little since they would not have wished to pursue the matter. Sad but true.
