In 1940, to reinforce its northern influence and to tap Norway's resources, Germany very quickly invaded and occupied Norway, despite some heroic resistance offered by Norwegians and foreign supporters (Britain and France being key).

While installing a puppet government under Vidkun Quisling, Norway was administered and run by Germany, under the Norvegen Richskommissariat.

Two awards were given to German soldiers and navy members for bravery in the invasion, the Narvik 1940 medals, gold and silver.
