I had a closer look at this ring with a magnifier this evening. In fact, the runes are (or were originally) flush with the enamel. The only parts where they are proud are between the runes and in the top right. These bits of the enamel are clearly damaged.

I wonder if anyone has a period ad for this pattern or if anyone has photos of an original. Thanks all for your input.
