Just a chime in here. It was war, a lot of people were in prison camps. The ones that were lucky enough to get to keep there wedding rings, or really lucky enough to hide them, could have done the poor engraving.
I always thought that scratched engraving on a dagger was done by the GI or family latter. or a attempt to increase value, a poor attempt at that.
Again it was war time, the German solders, Officers surely, could just stop by the seller or a jeweler or engraver and have it done quickly. I mean it was the 3rd Reich, if you refused, the other option was the wall outside, or a train ride. Just my thoughts.
