I have been fooled by so many fake dagger and knives in my early collecting years that I even stopped collecting for 5 years.
I started again 10 years ago and I am happy to be back in this great hobby. But now I shop only with serious militaria sellers.
And when the price is too good to be true, you can be 100% sure it is a fake.
