I can only guess. For me there might be two reasons to go this way. First is there was base die to make enamelled piece to cut it out for different top pieces.
Second reason could be enamel. In many cases enamell will crack after firing if there is too big base metal piece because of different cooling speeds of metal and enamel and different thermal expansion coefficient.


There are less original rings than you think, much less...
