I hear you guys on this.
And, I have looked long and hard at the blade and the maker mark. First of all, the blade is smooth as a baby's bottom and there is absolutely no evidence of buffing or grinding, no hollow where the stain is.
Second, the stain, while it struck me as looking like the seated squirrel mark, is in the wrong place, as Herrmann, points out, and really is not the right proportion to be a ghost image. I show my transitional undated HJ maker mark for comparison as well.
In fact, I now think of this stain as like the image of Jesus that sometimes people see on toasted cheese sandwiches, or all in my mind.
I will be posting this knife in my Eickhorn thread, once I find it again.
I am happy with what it is.
