@janjan, yes, but for SURE not the rule. This certain dagger came as it is, but I habe never seen another one this way and I have only personal ideas why it was worn this way. There could be that the wearer could not get to buy an army portepee "in the moment", perhaps this certain navy portepee was straight available for him within the family, perhaps he was a member or a former member of the navy, perhaps he liked this certain binding as it is much more steady than the regulation binding. Who knows.
