Someone showed their nice Gov dagger recently, so I thought I would show mine. About 30 yrs ago a slight acquaintance called me one evening to tell me he was going over to see a funny German dagger and would I like to come with him. Sure. we arrived at a man's house and here was the story- He was hired to do renovations in an old house in the French Quarters (the oldest part of New Orleans). He was taking out the old plaster on a wall (using a maul) and he uncovered a package on a support beam INSIDE the wall. He takes package home and opens it up to find 1) An old autographed baseball signed by Babe Ruth 2) some old dagger. The kicker is he has both of these sitting on his kitchen table- he has someone coming over the next day to see the baseball but wants to sell the dagger- my friend offers him 300 for the dagger, he accepts, and we leave- outside the door he offers me the dagger for 500 which I take- The baseball looked good-brownish leather with slightly faded Babe Ruth in blue ink. The finder sells the baseball the next day for $4000. The dagger scabbard is pretty bad and the crossguard has been brutalized-I mean "denazified". all internal parts have 67 on them- I bought a crossguard from TJ which fits perfectly and added a fake small portapee. Have considered having the scabbard silver plated, still have not done it. Mike
