In the imperial german army every soldier unless his rank could win both classes of the iron-cross.The winning did not entitle him to an automatic promotion in the next rank.
The next problem is the difference between ranks in the german and the british army. During WW 1, the german rank of a Gefreiter means the same like a lance corporal in the british.
