To quote from "For F�hrer and Fatherland","Each individual was required to qualify at each level or class with only one qualification recognized per year. Thus, it would require three years to qualify for the highest award.
"The award was rendered for excellence in shooting with the carbine,rifle,light MG and MG. Small arms qualifications consisted of a combined score with the rifle and MG,with minimum standards required at each grade.For example,awards 1-4 required that only four of six rifle rounds be in the bullseye at each of the three ranges,while 9-12 required five of six hits in the bullseye."
