Adam :

I was successful in steaming out minor depressions in an early SS grip. I used a cotton towel, q-tips and a soldering iorn. I cleaned the grip with mineral spirits to remove any wax, oils, ect as best possible. I applied luke warm water on the depression with a Q-tip and attempted to let it soak-in for a few minutes. Next I dampened the cotton towel ( the end of it) and layed it on the depression. I then immediatly brushed the tip of the hot soldering iorn across the towel as slowly as I felt comfortable with a few times. You will see steam obviously coming off the towel. The trick is to pass it over the depression slowly enough to drive the steam into the grip (more like super heat the water that hopefully saturated the depression when you hit it with the Q-tip). The grip I did was ebony and naturally a very hard wood, so it took quite a few passes on each spot. The natural black color of the grip also did not show any burns either, although I don't think I scorched it at all. It does work with decent but not always perfect results.
Good Luck.
