For sake of argument, at least everyone should acknowledge the solid black grips are period and original. If we can all agree on that, then you would have to agree they are rare simply because of their numbers. Rare pieces bring a higher premium than an ordinary piece. Regardless of what purpose they served, they are pleasing to the eye and if you like them, buy them. Just because you can't validate their purpose, one shouldn't bad mouth someone who likes them just because they exist. Anybody want to sell their black grip 2nd Luft?
