I like it! We've seen these rivets before. Sometimes filled in and sometimes not. Any marks? Thanks for showing it.

Rings like this used to be a bit common. BUT,,,no, not anymore... There are plenty of band variants to collect. So grab them when you can!

Hi folks,
Nice ring, Benten. Here's my variant of this pattern. It's a big heavy brute, made of brass with the remains of a silver wash. There are no marks and the back of the cartouche is flush. It doesn‘t look like a two-piece ring so no need for the rivet.
Cheers,
Stephen

thats massive Stephen !

Bentens is a true variant and his is the 'no rivet' variant. Probably does have rivet and just a drop of brass solder on it behind and polished out then plated. It's also one of the few that has a hint of a hallmark [?] of some kind on it....

I've also seen a no rivet ruined from the ground that the skull just had a thin 'nib' protruding on back of skull. Could be a drop of brass solder in a pre drilled hole [slightly large to allow for escaping gas] and skull just pushed on.. Skulls always had that tell tale upside down heart nose and either smooth band or hand embellished band.....

As mentioned a few years ago they were kind of on the common side. Now rarely seen for sale.....

Hello Stephen,

are you sure your ring is by brass ? .....by those pics I would say it's by zink silvered.....like mine.

Btw, is this a period known pattern ?.......I ask because I did put mine in repro/fantasy box since a while......

Ric

P.S. my ring appears by one piece.

Hi Ric,
Good question. It does look too dark to be brass. The wash is silver in colour, almost certainly not silver metal through, so probably zinc as you suggest.
Cheers,
Stephen

S & R.,,,, might have come in different metals [?] Zinc should feel lighter than 'Messing' and silver.. Also,, there was a silver wash,,usually a matt finish,,and what I call a 'flash' plating' a very thin type chrome or silver...

Don't bury the ring in the repro box!! It's old and these 'Premium rings' and/or 'Mens rings' can have very good value... They come in all sizes shapes and even in plastic.. A collectable in their own...

Interesting lnk:
