Gentlemen,

I'm sure, that there are a lot of imperial german visorcaps in our collections. May be, you like to post them. It will be interesting to see the different types and the colours of the old regiments. I begin with three caps. Nothing important, but always nice to see.

The visorcap above is a fieldgrey visor, M 15 type, worn by the III. Btl. of J.R. 83 (Waldeck).
The next one is a bavarian NCO's cap.

and the third is a cap for enlisted men, Artilleryregiment 76, Freiburg, ca. 1914. It would be nice to see some caps of our other members.

Kolibri,

Very nice visor caps indeed! Can you tell us which states or branches you consider to be rare or hard to find? Why do some have the tan visor while others are black? Last but not least, what sould a collector expect to pay for an imperial cap, say one that's not too rare?

Kind regards!

Bill,

I will try to give some answers.

At first, we all know, that every original and untouched cap is hard to find after nearly ninty years. A lot of them is repaired with new wrong visors or wrong sweatbands, often by fakers or a special kind of collectors, I don't like.

IF you find untouched caps, buy them only in good condition. It is not necessary to buy a second class piece, there are for my opinion enough good pieces out in the woodwork. Do, what silent hunters allways have to do: take you time, wait for the right moment and the right piece.

Mostly you will find caps with and without visors from the time pre 1914. Infantry, Artillery, support. Prices? Hard to tell: Between 100 Euro and 250 Euro. A little bit rarer are the fieldgrey infantry caps, since 1915 with fieldgrey visors, in different variations, I would pay for such a cap between 120 and 200 Euro.

Rare are all caps with leather visors we tell it "Knautschmütze". Rare is all the "Jäger"-stuff and all cavalry-visors, because these regiments had a special colour system, their caps were mostly only made for one regiment. Look at weitzes side for prices... I would'nt pay that money. For me, a fieldgrey Jägercap with leathervisor can cost 300 - 500 Euro, a similar Artillery-cap 250 - 350 Euro.

The first three of Robins caps show a little bit of the cavalry colour system and are interesting, because there is the skull added as a special part of tradition of these regiments. These caps are hard to find, expensive and the skull is often faked or later added (not here).

You can find some other badges like these skulls added on imperial caps - conform with the rules - for example a small eagle, the "Schwedter Adler" for the Dragoner-Regiment in Schwedt, the "Karpathenabzeichen" for the regiments fighting there during WWI or the "Edelweißbadge" of the Alpenkorps.

I would like to see some more visors from other collectors, special cavalry pieces like the Saxonian Gardereiter, the Garde du Corps, or other Regiments.

Best regards

Kolibri,

Thanks for taking the time to tell us something about these great-looking caps. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to study these first hand, so I appreciate your tips on adding a good example to one's collection. There are some nice photographs in "Die Preussischen Kavallerie-Regimenter 1913-1914" by Hugo F.W. Schulz, but the photos that you and Robin posted are most impressive. I've seen a couple of very good Third Reich cap collections and I think it would be fair to say that two or three
nice examples of imperial caps would do much to enhance a strictly 1933-1945 collection.

One of Robin's Leib-Hussar caps next to an SS officer's visor would make for an outstanding display in my opinion. I wouldn't mind owning that myself ... Smile

I hope some of you gents might be able to post some additional nice photos of your imperial caps... hey, even if you only have a nice '33-45 general's visor, let 'er rip! Big Grin Wink

Pablo,

a nice cap, but I presume not imperial german military issue.

Germany had 7 Regiments with a white capband without any piping ( Drag. 9, 10, 24, 25, Ul. 9, 13, 17 )and one regiment with white capband and blue piping (Saxonian Gardereiter)

A cap with a white capband and green piping is unknown to me. Is the white band later added so that there is another coloured band under it? In Green? Only a idea.

Pablo,

Reichswehr is impossible. Is there a third green pipe at the top of the cap? Can you please post a picture of the interieur inc. Sweatband and visor?

My newest beauty: A fieldgrey visor for NCO's or enlisted men in a bavarian mountain-batallion: "Bayrische Gebirgsjäger". Bavarian Jäger had the same cloth-colour like the other bavarian troops. A difference to prussia, were the Jäger had a special blue-fieldgrey cloth-colour. Regards Kolibri

Kolibri,

Many thanks for sharing your wonderful collection of imperial visor caps with us.
Those are really outstanding specimens and your photos are first class!

A display case that contained about 6-9 of those babies would be simply magnificent!
Maybe just a Pickelhaube or two thrown in for balance, a pinch of spice ..? heh. Smile

Very, very nice. Thanks.

Best regards!

A nice cap, is the visor made from cardboard (Pappe)? Ersatzmaterial?

The 81. was not a hessian regiment, it was kurhessian, a small and fine difference. Kurhessian regiments were part of the prussian contingent in the german army (look at the black-white-black cocade). The real hessian regiments were "Großherzoglich hessisch" and part of the hessian contingent in the army. these großherzoglich hessian regiments had a white-red-white cocade. Großherzoglich hessian and kurhessian regiments worked mostly together in the 18. Armeekorps.

Thanks for the info on the 81st regiment. The visor looks to be made out of thin leather.Or thin cardboard material. It is hard for me tell, but I think it is thin leather.

Thanks Joe Semen
