Hello,
Here are 2 Kriegsmarine dagger with portepee. The 2 portepee are not made with the same construction/size. Are the 2 WWII period item or not?
Thanks a lot.

Both appear to be WWII period pieces. However, the one on the left is not considered to be for the Navy but for the Army as the insert is flat bullion rather than of spiral twisted material. This is based on the fact that most Navy daggers that are obvously untouched since the war have knots with the twisted spiral insert. However-other than that there is no proof of this via period regulations or descriptions--and I have seen several Navy daggers with the "Army" knot and several Army daggers with the "Navy" knot--both the aluminum bullion type,--all direct buys from vets. So--this thing about the knots is not true in all cases as IMO both types were used by both services but in a minority of cases. The thing is, most collectors, myself included, prefer the spiral insert type for their Navy pieces and the other type for their Army daggers.
