The famous German falconry hunting clubs are not alone in this sport of hunting with birds. It is a world wide sport of many countries from the mountains to the deserts of the world. I would like to have more information to go on than the little bit I have been able to find so far. The word GREIFVOGEL is the German word for Bird of Prey.
This blade was manufactured by “F. HERDER ABR. SOHN SOLINGEN”. I do not know if the black spade on the imprint is part of their trademark or if it means something in addition to this blade. The slim carbine blade is in mint condition along with the rest of the bayonet. The fittings are silvered and the scabbard is in excellent condition. It was like finding something swept under the rug to come out for my collection of hunting pieces and engraved bayonets. I have tried to give you some close up pictures of details. I do not know what the black grip is made out of .

Ralph, nice looking knife, Freidrich Herder made many types of knives like these, some for the domestic market and a lot for the export market, I'm not sure where your one comes in but it sure is nice.

It's a nice dagger-but certainly not related to falconry IMO. I would'nt even call it a hunting dagger-to me it's more like a fancy personal weapon. Many of these type daggers were carried around the turn of the century by the "gentlemen" of the time-and some of the "ladies" too.

As always, you never cease to astound. Great piece whatever it's for. I really dig the spiderweb above the crossguard, very unique. The bird head pommel is particularly nice as well, for a second I thought it was an "uglyhead" bayonet.
