Tyring to tread lightly as a 'quiet' forum member, with kind of a question about where people think the market $ is going for 36 chained daggers.

The Question: I have a 36 chained, classified by the dealer at the time (years ago) as a near mint, untouched type II. I love this dagger. My price to let go of this baby would have to be 12K as I've seen none nicer go with the dealers lately around 10K. Does anyone have any current data on what the market prices are right now? Am I off with these figures?

How much would it cost you to let go of a pristine chained... i'm not even sure i have a price... just looking for a friendly dialogue on prices...

Smile be well all

I've seen two on dealer sites in better condition than yours and yours is in good nick!

they went for $8.5k and $8k respectively.

i personally doubt you'd get $12k for yours from anyone here.

could try your luck at one of the big shows?

I think 12K is too much as well. 8K is a Dealer price which you could get, as they have sold at that price but don't forget they're on display on the Dealer's websites 24/7.

Very nice indeed, from the 1 photo shown. Smile

Since we live in a democracy, you can ask whatever price you think is right.
However, the question is whether or not it will sell at that price ?
The answer is a definite NO !
Paul Hogle from www.Lakesidetrader.com recently sold a fantastic conditioned SS M36 for less than $ 8,000 USD.
At the moment, there are about 5 E++/NM conditioned SS M36 for sell on a major dealer's web site and all below $ 10,000 USD...............and they've been there for months, if not years. Wink
In my honest opinion, a trully near mint (not an E++) SS EM will sell for about $ 9,000 USD and it has to be an early nickel silver type, NOT the later plated type chained, unmarked blade and no Gau mark on its lower crossguard.
Not assuming that a Gau mark's chained is incorrect but simply stating, that I would ONLY pay such a price for what is generally agreed as being a "textbook" type configuration.

Hope this help and good luck !

I currently have a very very nice M36 with KNOT at $9250.00, so if YOU can get 12K, I need to go over my inventory before the next show and jack up my prices.

Pat,
Looks like very soon I'll trade my ~70 years old M36 for 2 years old Matrix or Yaris! Cool Razz Big Grin

Maybe it's me, but anytime somebody says "I think the market has slowed", the guys collecting that type go over the "top" and tell you your wrong. Razz
Well A year ago you were hard pressed to find a chained SS dagger anywhere execpt maybe at one of the "crazies" sites. Johnson was out. Wittmann was out. ( You had to call to get on the list and take a number! ) Eek Does anyone remember that?
Now I like SS myself but in my opinion, if you want to hit the big psychological figure of 10K,
then I argee with my colleagues it better have
all the burnishing on that solid nickle chain. But, IF there was a hallmark of "900" on the back of the link along with a half moon and a crown, or even a "825" - there would be a scramble. Cool

I have been unable to update my web site for the last couple of years to do server problems. I have a new server now and it will be up and running by July. That dagger was sold a long time ago.

IMO, when you make a purchase outside of an established "Dealer", this should be closer to what you should expect to pay, even for something in very nice condition! The fact that SO VERY MANY of these types of daggers exist in current collections should be the true deciding factor of ones anticipated expenditure when contemplating a purchase - unfortunately, all of the hoarding and hyping in this particular genre of militaria seems to be leading a tremendous amount of the newly and much more unfortunate collector (that is, if you weren't lucky enough to own a few before the hype kicked in!) astray of what should truly be expected!

Ultimately, one must decide for oneself the true VALUE that is received (and perceived) in purchasing an M36 in today's world (and tomorrow's, mind you!), but for my money and experience, I believe so many thousands of Dollars could be spent in better ways for future "investments" . . .

Brad

P.S. But then again, I am truly amazed at how many people are out there in today's World that have so much EXPENDIBLE cash just begging to spent very liberally without concern! Maybe I'm nuts, but I just can't see why everyone is so quick to expect to pay so much for something so common? Maybe false belief in it's status of rarity? I don't know, but to each his own!

Thanks for the opinions... JR, great pics as usual - I do favor the type II nickel (as I'm biased cuz I own one) and I think they just look 'cooler.'

Happy Memorial Day,

Just returned from the OVMS Show, and I bet I counted at least (20) M36 daggers being offered. Asking prices ranged anywhere from $4,000.00 on up to $9,000.00. Kris Anderson had an absolutely stunning specimen for $6,000.00.

These things are really not that rare - just hoarded and coveted by so many right now! In my opinion, I still think some of the prices people lay out on these things are just a little over the top . . . with a little shopping around, and a little sensible bargaining, I'm quite sure $5,000.00 would still buy most fellows a very satisfying example of an M36!
