This bird was in his nest at the SOS. He had been hiding in the late Robert Waitts collection for several years but I was able to catch him before he flew away forever.

This is probably the best known example of the very rare Prussian State Oberforster hirschfanger, circa 1908, and only authorized for the highest of ranks. I know of 5 or 6 others around but they are Eickhorns with etched steel blades. This one is by WKC and has a beautiful Damascus blade with raised gold hunting and forestry scenes.

On the spine it says--C. A. DEMMLER, KAISERL, KOENIGL HOFLIEFERANT, BERLIN which means approx.-Supplier for the King and Emperor. It has the cipher of Wilhelm I on the clamshell. The condition is wonderful and stunning to say the least for a piece 100 years old.

Grips are ivory and there is a lot of hand work on the fittings. A work of art for sure. I am very pleased to be the custodian for a while. I know you will enjoy the photos.

Astounding piece Houston, I'm sure you were lying in wait for that bird. The damast detail on the nickmesser is something special too and you know that when the nicker looks that good, the hirschfnger is going to be outstanding.

A stunning and splendid piece of Prussian art.
Houston was kind enought to let me hold it at the SOS, and it is trully a magnificent Hirshfanger.
However, I was a bit puzzled by your above statement, and I quote, "very please to be the custodian for a while". Confused
Does this mean that this beauty could eventually end up in the Great White North. Big Grin Wink

Pat it means that we ALL are only the custodians for "a while". Sad but true-and the older you get the more aware of that you become. Who knows who the next lucky custodian will be? Yeah--of your stuff too Pat. Some day.

Houston I see a couple of things here;
A beautiful well detailed dagger of the highest degree
Great pictures detail shows perfect well done

The answer as to why you may have been selling so many daggers. This would have set anyone back a couple of bucks.

All n all thanks for letting us see this piece

Stunning hirschfnger Houston, I know we discussed the maker, if I remember rightly this piece is not marked, I see you have come to the conclusion that it's a WK&C, I found the clamshell in their 1900 catalouge, right down to the stylized "W", the acanthus leaves at the bottom of the scabbard mount are the other give away along with the scabbard lug. It's seriously nice and a wonderful addition to your collection.

Absolutely gorgeous.
Just to see treasures such as this "in person" is reason enough to attend shows like the SOS.

Hi Houston,

This piece could not have gone to a more appropriate collection. I also looked at a couple of pieces from the collection, but could not part with the dollars.
