I find it difficult to get them, (very late)HJ's with an intact plastic strap.

It took me a long time to realize that the plastic straps were real rather than fake. The few I have seen were stiff or cracked, but that one looks pretty good.

While we are on the subject, what is the take on straps made up of layer on layer of thin cardboard, has anybody else seen these and would they have been early or late. I have one on a M7/5 but no pictures at the moment.

With the overall buildup and other needs of the Wehrmacht there were periodic shortages of leather in Germany - with some shortages being earlier than one might expect. As a result some military/paramilitary items (bayonet frogs, holsters, etc.) also used different synthetic and plant based laminates as substitutes for leather. Some substitutes seem to have only been used for military production.
That some of this phenomena trickled down into civilian production is just of reflection of what was happening, probably affecting mostly those who did not have reserves of conventional materials to work with. They usually did not hold up as well and were most likely discarded either during or after the war. In general ersatz (substitute) leather products are fairly scarce when compared to the leather ones. FP

I like the plastic strap and knife Herman - I'm trying to find one myself.
There is an example of an ersatz HJ belt and late war buckle on Lakesidetraders site.

Here are 2 HJ's with "erzatz" leather: a black one and a brown one. interesting to see is that they are both part of a "pointy" scabbard configuration.
