Gentlemen,

On several authentic late HJ knifes, I have seen diamonds from which the gold under the swastica is "bleeding" out of its square (see picture). I am wondering if these diamonds are replacements or if originals with this problem do exist?

The whole knife MIGHT be suspect.

I would think that since these HJ diamonds were produced in the thousands for various attachments that the quality control might not be as good as a fine enameled dress pin. I would not be too concerned about it.

The metal of the square is higher than the surrounding sections to allow the enamel to be placed on the four surrounding quadrants. So if the metal square isn't perfect, the enamel accents the flaw. I think that's OK, your examples look genuine.

Some of mine looks like that, too. Not that much maybe, but the same "problem". However, I am absolutely positive they are real, and I agree with John/vintagetimenow. I wouldnt worry.

In metal stamping operations for one reason or another defects occasionally appear in the stamped item which usually cause them to be sent to the scrap bin for recycling. Sometimes the defect is in the metal blank, maybe the press needs to be adjusted, or a die is beginning to break down etc. etc. And sometimes the flawed part is processed just like perfect condition parts and ends up in a finished product.

I don’t see anything particularly amiss with the first image. And while the second image is not as sharply defined, the emblem in it from what I can see also seems to be fairly normal. I would not be losing any sleep over either one. FP

Thanks John - I would still want to see this knife before passing opinion. It's not a "one-looker" based on that one shot.

I did not ask opinions on a particular knife, just wanted to get input on diamonds that display this problem.

To answer the question accurately it would help to know if knife you used as an example is an original knife before we state whether these diamonds are replacements or if originals with this problem do exist.
