I have seen a few pictures of Red Cross Leader's daggers with a portapee. Is thgis correct or is the wearing of a portapee intended more for the Social Welfare dagger, or did someone just attach one for the picture?
If a portapee is warranted, what portapee will fit (Army, Luftwaffe)?

Thanks,

John

John,
Portapees' were worn on both daggers, it didn't really mean what branch you were in. The one that was on one I used to own was just a standard one like you would find on a heer or luft dagger, there is a special knot for the red cross and you usually find them on the hewer but originals are very hard to find and fakes are quite abundant. Hope this helps.

There are very few photos of any knots being worn on the leader's dagger--most of the time they did not wear one. IMO RC/SW Leaders only wore the knot when they also held rank in the military. Also there are no clear photos of any RC EM wearing a knot and there are no known regulations authorizing one, These are the facts despite what you may see in books.

Here you have a period pic of such a dagger worn WITH portepee. It seems to be the social wellfare dagger variant as the buckles of the hangers are square and, believe it or not, the original picture is sharp enough to see (with a magnifying glass) the round holes in the dagger scabbard where the hangers are attached.

Nice picture. One of the few I have seen where the officer's dagger is being worn.
