Gents,

I have been trying to trace back references to the "W" crossguard stamp as being that of the Feldherrnhalle.

The earliest reference I have found is on page 320 of John Angolia's "Dagger, Bayonets & Fighting Knive of Hitler's Germany". He also mentions an "L" for Liepzig.

Does anyone have a solid link to the use of the "W" ? Was it used as a supplemental gau mark on an SA dagger or should it be the only mark ?

Dave

What I remember the W stands for "Wachstandarte"FHH or "Wachgefolgschaft"FHH. I think this is the marking on daggers of the cadre of the Wachstandarte Feldherrnhalle. There were also men from other sa-groups who did duty for some time within the Wachstandarte (I think to remember that Weitze has or has had a honor-document concerning such duty) and I assume that these would not have a W marked dagger. I do have no written proof for this, it is what I have heard and learned from elder, experienced collectors.

Halocomb's SA book lists W under group abbreviations as Wachstundarte-W Standarte "Feldherrnhalle".

These do exist but are almost never seen. I saw one many years ago--it had the stamped W only and was on a very yellow nicotine stained piece-unquestionable and real and the collector did not know what it was.

I have had 2 with the "W" marking, one on just the crossguard and one on both the scabbard throat and the crossguard. Both happened to be also marked with the group mark "P" for Pommerania.

I believe there were actually FIVE SA Wache (hence the W) Battalions, FHH being one of them. (Berlin, FHH in Munich, and three other big cities) These were made up of the best SA men pulled from various SA groups which would also account from the presence of a original Group marking on the dagger.

Mr Jerry, There were six sturmbanne of the Wachstandarte, Berlin, Munchen, Hattingen, Krefeld, Stettin and Stuttgart.

The "W" as a gruppe mark on a dagger doesn't really make any sense.
