Hiya mate, no expert on damascus here but to me the nose on the eagle looks pretty hooked - like gonzo from the muppets Big Grin. From reading previous threads about that style of eagle (in etches)there is common conjecture that it is not period. However this is the first i have seen in on Damas...

What I can see in the pics it is no "real" damascus steel but socalled "etch-damast" (imitation of damast steel).
Concerning originallity of this piece: my knowledge is the same as sturmbrigades.

I hope I'm not butt'n in here with useless information however the so-called hooked-nosed eagle was, in my opinion, a legitimate etched eagle insert. It is true, and this is how the misinformation got out there, that the hooked-nosed eagle was used in the production of reproductions. As with most reproduction etches they are based on real etched inserts. Just because an etch happens to have the hooked-nosed eagle does not automatically put it into the reproduction bin. It can be used as a Red Flag but one must look for other Flags before a determination can be made that the example is indeed a repro. I believe the hook-nosed was an insert from F.W. Holler early in the Third Reich era, then was discarded for a more
stylised eagle insert seen on their etched dress bayonets. The hook-nosed eagle can clearly be seen on the cover of Wittmann's Luft book as well as on some of the Luft etches within the chapters. I leave you with this thought...

Take a look at Craig G's website he has one for sale - look at the fittings and the pattern on his blade...

You should also post clearer pictures of the blade, and all fittings pommel...

Von Ryan I agree that hooked is okay, i have seen a number of bayo etches with just what you have shown. Do you have a "Gonzo etch" (as above)in a bayo or are they all as sharp as the one shown?

Joe in particular the thread below is very informative and give some good info on the Eagle and also shows a dagger similar to yours:
