I agree. A very nice textbook example. However, I am sure this one will be expensive as I recognize the seller's photo technique and background.

Cheers,

Collectors will typically migrate to the so-called 1st-pattern SS runes leaving the ET, NS and SE associated patterns somewhat unappreciated. 2nd-pattern, or in this case ET-pattern, runes are, to my eyes, equally as attractive as any EF, Q or Pocher. But, that's just me.

Hi Jimmy,

It is very difficult to find nice ones these days. Most are entrenched deep in established collections. Double decal SS helmets in this kind of condition are expensive indeed. The price you quoted would be top dollar IMO. Black DD SS helmets are even more expensive however, the collector base for the higher prices is quite limited. Overyone likes them but not many will actually fork over the dough! I have found this out through email discussions with others recently.

Cheers,

Darryl

Very nice helmet!!

Darryl, you are so right. There are very few serious buyers for the high end helmets. Everyone is interested and likes them, but when it comes down to forking over more money worth than the average American has in his garage there are indeed very few that has the balls. What people do forget is that this is indeed an investment that has historically yielded much more than the stock market.

You can actually put a second mortgage on your house and buy a DD SS like this one shown and actually make a hefty profit after 5 years. That is of course if you have the creditworthiness and can afford the extra mortgage payment. If you would have done that 5 years ago you would have been about $7500 ahead today. Interest charges taken into account.

Hello,
If I know that helmet, and I think I do, that may not be the original liner. Checks the rivets for burring. Your ET decal should have a very bright tone to it in person, is that true? Dave

Dave,

That's the helmet. The liner was replaced between the 2005 SOS and the 2006 SOS.

I had thought it looked familiar but needed some time to confirm it was the same helmet.

Cheers,
Erich

Guys,

Shine a light on the problems and the perps - Please.

One of the things that stops folks from posting on ALL Forums is threads where problems are exposed but no one will say what the problem is or who the dealer is. It makes it look like an "insider's club" which I am sure is not the intention here or anywhere else.

Thanks,
Dave

I think there are people that sits with inside information on this helmet that they are not sharing 100% with the rest of us. Provided that this information is 100% correct and relaiable, I believe this is the right place to share this.

When you say replaced liner. Does that mean replaced leather or replaced liner band? With a righteous liner band I would sell that helmet for about 12K. If the liner band has been removed it is more like 5K.
Best Wishes,
Bob

For clarification I was thinking that was a helmet in another advanced collector.

One should note. That ETs typically have different liners but I have seen and owned original examples with this liner.

It sounds like you guys know something else?

Unfortunately, I am not privy to prices of helmets sold behind the scenes... Are M35 DDs really selling for over $10,000 now???

Hi Jimmy!
The decals and exterior are perfect and fitting of a 10K+ helmet. What we really need to learn about is the liner and if it has been out of the helmet or is a replacement. If that were the case it would be a 5-figure loss. If they have not been out it is actually a reasonable price in my opinion. Not cheap at 10K but not ridiculous either. You may want to drop me an email when you get a chance. [email protected]

I was offered this helmet at the 2005 SOS and declined because the liner had a STRONG smell of mothballs.

The next time I saw the helmet it was sitting on Steve Wolfe's table at the 2006 SOS with a different leather liner. I do not know if the liner band has been replaced but I know for certain the leather liner is not original to the helmet.

Please e-mail me if you want further details.

Erich

I can't tell by these pictures that the liner has been out but I think I could with a hands on inspection.

I trust Erich if he says he saw it with a different liner.

ET's typically did not have the type liner.

Even with a replaced liner (with another correct original) this would still be flirting with $10k these days.

Viper,

I recall examining this helmet at the SOS this year. It was on the low shelf at the back of the Wolfe-Hardin table. It was next to an Edelstahl SS/SD DD and a WSS Officer visor.

It seemed everything was tight to me, but I did not focus on the liner band to see if there was evidence of disturbance. It's always nice to see a ring of undisturbed humidified dust, but this one may not have had much to start with. It was an exceptionally clean example.

I don't who the current owner is, but if it's Steve, just discuss it with him. Steve is a straight shooter and I'm sure he will address the issue head on.

Thanks, Jimmy, for clarifying. I did not realize prices had past $10k. I asked in September 2004 when SS M35 DD prices would reach that amount, and was told "$10,000?. I doubt it any collector around would be willing to pay that amount." I'm surprized it took less than 20 months; though it sounds like behind the scenes prices reached $10k a while ago.

Good luck Jimmy with your quest for an unmonkeyed with SS helmet!!! I'm sure you will be quite happy once you have obtained one!!
