My friend sent a ring for me to have a look at.. Of course it was sold to him as a WW2 ring, and from a good source. Supposedly from one of the Eastern Volunteer groups..

Different!. Someone had done some customizing to it big time! I've seen the band many times. With many type of fronts on it from Latvian Vol. shields to initials and glass 'gems' in it... Check out the photos of it first..Then a question.........

O.K. , now the trouble for me to date correctly..

The stampings on the outside band. Usually a East Europe thing and in this case true. They are Russian.. But depending which way the ring is held is the trouble..
The Stamps.....

and,,this one would be 1958 and up.. Not really what the owner is wanting..

Remember,,it all depends which way the ring is held. With the front 'customized' its hard to say which way is up!
Also the stamping next to the mark is the DISTRICT Mint Mark.. Theres a list of them in reference books but none match up to the rings stamps..Also, the district marks have been known to occasionally be on either side.

I do not like the fact that the stamp that really matters almost looks purposely defaced!

O.K. , any member really familiar with Russian marks?..Thanks ,G.

Evgeniy,, Could you please post the 'District' mark 'RG'? [next to content mark] on the Russian ring forum to see if anyone can identify it? Thanks , G.

E. ,you could very well be right about that mark,,it could be the mark of the artist/maker..

But how about the other mark,,maybe it is not the 84 content mark 1908-1926.. Maybe its upside down! and its the 875 mark 1927- 1958........

G,
I'm only guessing as well. "If" the ring was held in place. I believe the way you have it pictured makes sense. To bad we can't see none of the district mint mark, but we can see the shape and IMO I think your correct in assuming for now it's either 583 or 875. Test it for silver content. I know not much help but at least you will know whether it's 583 or 875. Like you stated both 583 and 875 with that shape in mind was used from 1927-1946/1954-1958 and then in 1958 only the 583 star w/sickle and hammer. Maybe studing the band design might help, but then again maybe not. Just an observation, the design resembles what we would see on leather as well. What do you think? Nice ring. Sorry I can't help more.

Mikee, yes,,it could also be the Commie mark too! but its more than likely the 84 which = 1908 to 1926,,,OR the 875 which = 1927 to 1958..

This is a friends ring. I've mentioned testing to him also,,he's not really interested. . I've seen the band style before on wartime rings. Even if its he 875 mark he's still safe as it also covers wartime pieces. He wanted to be 100% sure though,,I've told him in this hobby particularly this subject matter its hard to be 100%.. His rings are going back to him tomorrow,,I like them all and he's got a great little haul of skulls!
