Hello:
I have recently returned from 4 month stay in Germany Hamburg, Berlin Frankford but spent the most time in a town/village called Paderborn in Buren District very nice and historically interesting place all the time I wAs their I could find no ww2 helmets at all found those post war boarder german helmets being flogged as origional ww2 but nothing genuine I know the Swastika and such is very illegal their
Was surprized to find no German war memorials either their was a building in Berlin I was told was for the veterans of the German military but was told to not even bother going to see it as it is pretty much empty inside so I never went also was surprised to find out that most German citizans really know very little of their own history and in particular WW1 and WW2 I just found it surprizing

Question please can anyone please inform me what would be the best country/location to locate origional German WW2 items helmet s etc or memorials I herd possibly Latvia but any knowledgeable help would be very much appreciated as I am returning to Europe shortly

Thanks much
bruce

When I was stationed in Germany in the early 1970's I found numerous WWI memorials in the towns near the French border. This was in the southern part of Germany. There were also a few monuments to the Frano-Prussian war as well. Mostly these were found in village squares. As for WWI - I saw nothing at all.

Aggressive de-nazification, dosed with Liberal amounts of guilt (both from within and from abroad..)have ensured cultural amnesia on a National level.

Victors build monuments, the loser does not.

Grieving is a sentiment best practiced in private, therefore no memorials either..

Unfortunate but there you are..

As for German items, if you visit the little floh markt's you can often find equipment such as canteens, field straps boots, packs etc..knowing a little German helps, as the best items (if there..) will be hidden from sight..bring cash!, and/or schnapps..!!! Razz
