Hi guys,

The much anticipated new SS Helmets book by the late Mike Beaver/completed by Kelly Hicks is now available by pre-order online. Check out the link below. Available in April 2006.

The book's official title is "SS Helmets - The History, Use and Decoration of the Helmets of the Black Corps". I have seen a few of the images that will be displayed inside and I can easily say that you will all be very, very impressed. Many new and exciting period images and fresh unseen helmets in collections today are included...all in the large coffee table size format typical of the Schiffer publications.

Cheers,
Darryl

Yes indeed. This book will certainly occupy a distinguished place on my helmet reference shelf too. I was very pleased and honoured to see that Kelly and the publisher decided to use my period framed portrait photo of the SS-VT 'Germania' soldier on the cover. I got this photo from Peter von Lukacs about 5 years ago.

Hi Darryl,
is the new book regarding just Allgemeine Helmets or Waffen SS as well?
I will order it as soon as I can anyway.

Tom,

The book covers ALL of the helmet styles and organizations of the SS...from the early Politische Bereitschaft, Allgemeine-SS, SS-Verfugungstruppe, SS-Totenkopf and the Waffen-SS to include the rare double-runes and foreign volunteer examples. It's all there.

Kelly says that he received many never before seen SS helmet photos from private photo collections which will enhance this book greatly. Perhaps if he agrees I can show you an example. You will be impressed...I guarantee it.

Cheers,

Darryl

This would be something really nice to show my grandfather. Interestingly though these books seem to be more interesting to me than they are to him. Confused

He lived it and don't need to read a book to remember it. We as the generation after can only be curious and wonder about thoughs 12 years and what really happened and what it was like, you grandfather knows. You are right Jim, Mrs. Rev. Mike will not like it either. I am thinking of changing my credit card billing address to my office for reasons of "cover and concealment".

Thanks for the "heads up" Darryl. This one will be a "must" and I will order one immediately. Do the publisher give a discount to members of the GD forum like Bender does?

Also, I wish I would have known that Hicks was collecting info on rare foreign volunteer helmets for this book. I have several helmets he would have liked to consider from Norwegian volunteers.

Erik,

As Anders mentions, it's nice to have you back. I am not sure how big the section on foreign SS helmets is as the project has been kept in relative secret...and rightly so. I have only been privy to a few things.

I do know that Kelly is not receiving any royalties from this book...it is all being given to Mike Beaver's wife and family. So, I am not sure if any "discount" will be forthcoming. I, for one, am not asking for one and will be buying my copy (which I hope Kelly will sign) at full retail.

Just ordered one as well - for the European customers, like myself, the price is as usual much higher than in the states = GBP 59.95 plus postage. Look forward to reading the book in due course.

I saw the Schiffer table at the SOS and Bob Biondi had some pamphlets and a copy of the dust jacket for this book available for viewing. It is much larger than I thought it would be. This is going to be a great book...I can't wait for April.

Kelly Hicks and I stopped by the table and chatted with Bob for a few minutes. I asked if it was not possible to have an advance copy at the table for viewing by potential customers. He said that has been done in the past but (unfortunately) such books have "disappeared" at the show and since the book is not yet published, some final last minute changes could still occur. He didn't want people to see it one way and receive it in slightly different variation when published. We agreed with his opinion.

Cheers,

Darryl

Darryl I didnt think to ask when I was there but any word when the other volume on cloth SS headgear is due out? I think Bill Shea was going to finish that one.

Perry,

I didn't ask about the cloth SS Headgear volume either. However, it was my impression that it should not be too long in coming. I heard both Bill Shea and Gordon Williamson were working on it.

Cody,

I don't believe so. This volume will only focus on the cloth headgear itself...visors, schiffchen, etc. Mike Beaver's volume on SS Camouflage covers covers (as you said with pun intended).

Anyone receive it yet or have an update?

Short of posting photos and quoting from the book:

It is a coffee-table-sized book (9 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches) of 198 pages divided into 11 chapters such as "Commercial, or Non-Combat Shell Transitionals"; "The SS-RZM Helmet"; chapters on the M35, M40 and M42; "A Study of Camouflage Paint Finishes", "Sicherheitsdienst (SD)", "Variant and Non-Mainstream Helmets and Decorations" and "The SS-'Deutschland' Portfolio".

This is, overwhelmingly, a pictorial study of SS helmets and decals with EVERY modern photo in color. It is sprinkled throughout with contemporary black-and-white photos of SS helmets in wear.

The verbiage at the beginning of each chapter is kept to a minimum with detailed descriptions of each photo.

The acknowledgements section includes Al Barrows, Bill Shea, Bob Iqbal, Chris Jones, Darryl P., John Suprin, Ken N., Larry Foley, Larry Marcella, Ludwig Baer, Matt Miller, Mike Gaspar, Perry Floyd, Peter Whamond, Robert Kondor, Shu Kamisada, Tom Kibler, Ty Smith, Willi Zahn and William Matchett among many others.

If you liked "SS-Steel" then you'll love this book!

Cheers,
Erich

Schiffer reports the left coast will receive copies on the 16th. You East Coast guys are lucky to be graced with the geographic serendipity of living relatively near the publisher.

Schiffer is also at fault for omitting contributors, of which, at least one shall go nameless. Wink

Received my copy today in the Pacific Northwest. Magnificent piece of work!

Take heart Darryl, the books are getting closer to the border!
