Recently I spoke to a new collector from GDC- as we made arrangements to meet and show-and-tell his wife told him to be very careful, as I could be an ax murderer. Just wonder what else people have been considered? Mike

An AXE?? How ridiculous. It's common knowledge that you dissect your victims with a scalpel...

in all honesty, i`ve never been called anything unsavoury!!. i am careful who i tell what i collect, my stuff isn`t on open display anywhere in the house, apart from a few helmets and they are out of the way.

i find most people i take `into my confidence` are fascinated, and very interested, at least up until the point i untie and release them!!. Wink

I keep my hobby close to the vest. Very few people outside imediate my family know I collect that " Nazi stuff" and I kinda like it that way.

Only my immediate family and a few good friends know about my collection, I have German stuff and Commonwealth stuff so I don't care what they say.

I've been asked few times this question after some people have seen my German daggers.
After seeing my Japanese swords they think that I hate also the Americans.
At last I show them my Polish daggers concluding that I really hate only the IDIOTS.

Sorry . . . but I guess I've been very, very lucky in that the people who know what I collect are bighter than that and simply call me a "collector." ~ Ian

The only people who can see my collection are close friends (and they are "sellected" people, I prefer quality than quantity) and the family members, plus couple of fellow collectors (hallo ZET Smile) It happened once however, that someone from "outer circle" saw my collection (by coaccidence) and after a while there was a rumour circulating here and there that my kid was brought up in "SS SPIRIT" Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes ...

I ONLY HAD ONE INCIDENT WHICH WAS FIVE YEARS AGO. THE USUAL AGAST LOOK AND "HOW CAN YOU COLLECT THAT TYPE OF MATERIAL?" I RESPONDED, "BETTER I AS AN AMERICAN COLLECT ARTICLES OF THE 3RD REICH THAN THE 3RD REICH STILL BE IN EXISTANCE AND POLITICAL LEADERS COULD COLLECT AMERICAN ITEMS." THERE WAS REALLY NO RESPONSE THAT COULD COME FORWARD AFTER THAT. Big Grin

Before we were married my wife was a bit freaked out that I was going to drive 300 miles to meet a collector and buy a luft machette. She was not very happy with me meeting someone on the internet. Ok, no name calling here but I had to call home berfoe and after the buy. The collector is a member here James LeBrasseur, hope i got that spelling correct James! Smile We had meet at the Fargo, ND show(yip they have a show 2 really!!)a year or so before that. I was crusing with an imperial sword and James hooked me. I told my wife I already knew the guy and told her the story about the show. Worse yet for her I was going to meet a guy from a gun show Smile BTW I am sure the Home Depot parking lot has never seen another Luft machette deal since then Wink a keeper of a piece also.

I too only show my closest friends. I have been given odd looks when I buy TR items. If I bought Russian items it would be ok as they were MUCH better than the Nazis.

The worst thing for me for as long as I have been in our hobby is accused of being a liar, "must be a reproduction", pirate of some other collector's items con man. However, it wasn't from my family and friends. Other than that little glitch, it's all good.

Just last weekend at THE flea market in Mobile AL when I quickly lost interest in a bunch of fake/repo Nazi junk and was walking away the vendor said “WAIT I have Klan stuff too”!

My mother is still convinced that I’m a COMMUNIST (with all that Nazi stuff, you do know they were the enemy) and it still upsets her when I reply no MoM I’m a Thespian! “Your going to have to explain that to God one day, you being a thespian communist and all”

To be quite honest, I have never been called any "bad names".
I've always kept my collecting interest very private. I do not tell my neighbors and nor my employees but I do tell my wife.....sometimes. Wink

The funniest thing that ever happened to me in relation to our hobby, was that I was once called a "stupid Yank"................told him I was Canadian, from a Spanish mother and Swiss father and married to a half French-Canadian and half-British..................I had no reply from him. Wink Big Grin
That happened in Munich while searching for some TR artifacts at a flea market.
