Here are some pictures of a short Police bayonet I picked up from the family of a vet a coupla years ago it is unmarked and has an unusual grips I think Mike

It also has a very unusual eagle.

The grip plates definitely looks old, but they are seriously oversized comparing to others. Was it purposely made this way or was it a bad replacement ?

It was made this way, it hasn't been tampered with, I figure it is late war. Mike

An interesting police bayonet. Even though you bought it from a vet it certainly has some red flags for me.

The grip panels are seriously oversized and poorly fited. The rivets stick out on the back and are very odd. The eagle is oversize and solid brass/bronze instead of the expected aluminum or late zinc based.

From the photographs I would suspect that this grip and insignia has been replaced some time ago. During the war or after the war perhaps? It is possible that the bayonet was repaired or assembled at the end of the war to sell to occupying GIs. It is certainly not an item of issue. Thanks for showing it.

The bayonet itself appears to be a late Puma or Holler. These did indeed have a flush mounted Police eagle and wreath, but they were the grey thin potmetal style. This grip eagle is the Fire Police Sword style and appears to be a late 1930s manufacture.
The stag grip plates are not like the late police style used by Holler or Puma, but appear to be almost like the early Police Bayonet style.
While the age and workmanship appears original, I tend to agree that it is either a US occupation souviner or was post war assembled.
