I recently bought this helmet on craigs list its a green helmet painted black. Im assuming after the war to make it look like an ss helmet. should I leave it alone or strip it and restor it? thanks

I read on another post that you can get stuff from a body shop that takes off one coat of paint without taking off the one under it. I'm skeptical. Sure makes you wonder what is underneath,though. I feel it's highly unlikely there's a decal underneath, and if there is, it'd probably be ruined if you remove the paint. Don't let me discourage you though. Personally, I'd just sell it, and get a helmet that's not monkeyed with. You'll be much happier in the end, and you won't have wasted your valuable time. Good luck.

Lots of these were used post war as fire brigade helmets or police helmets and a good number came into the US from the Czech Republic. These, unlike the Norwegians were simply painted over and often yield original paint and decals when properly and carefully stripped.
