" TIS BUT A SCRATCH " Smile

This type of helmet generates so many questions and would be the highlight of any collection. It immediately starts you thinking about the poor sod who was wearing it and whether or not he survived the impact. Half an inch either side and would the projectile have glanced off?, what caused the damage, bullet or schrapnel?, enemy or friendly fire?, or could it simply have been caused by a pick at the end of the war to make the helmet unusable as so many were. Either way a helmet with damage sparks interest for me and although to a serious collector this would ruin the helmet, to me it defines the horrors of war!.
Thanks for showing.

Nice camo,in fact I had one sprayed in the same colours a while back. Perhaps it was from the same batch that were done at the same time.

I have posted this photo before, which is a similar battle damage. It is a famous photo of Frw. Legion Norwegen member that was shot through the helmet and survived with only burnt hair!!!! The photo was taken by the Legion's own photographer Ulf Tur and appeared in DNL's memorial book "Legionsminner".

The book "Legionsminner" was the official pictorial book issued to members of the Legion in 1943. It was recently laid out on the internet in its complete format, and available to download on this link (pdf format).

This book is highly sought after by collectors, but very hard to come by.

Guys

Helmet liner is only partial, was a Serious wound or KIA as the Liner band has also hit severly and is pushed in badly,if on a head would have crushed the Frontal Skull plate completely, liner was bloodied and where blood was rotted away.More pics. This is a Period piece from a Private family in west Virgina.Pics are a Bit dark...I need a set of camera lights.

By the way I think this type of damage is fully acceptable by most collectors...I dont think it detratcs to badly from the price...surely not retail but the Camo and damage work in tandem.

Apologies if my above post implied that the damage would affect the desirability of this helmet, far from it. If anything I would be willing to pay that little bit extra for one in such condition.
After see-ing so many mint examples posted on this forum it was pure speculation on my part and ill go bury my head back in the dagger section Smile.

Tom & Slayer,

I used to own Slayer's. It came from Matt M and was a vet pick up.

these two are almost identical. Also, very similar to my Autumn SS camo. Love the colors.

Perhaps Matt, can say more about this helmet.

Slayer,

That is the helmet that I owned. Bought it from Matt M. Ty must of traded or sold it back to Matt at some point.

I sold it to J Donovan to help fund the purchase of this very rare, untouched Panzer Jaeger assault wrapper, few of which exist today.

A beautiful camo helmet! No wonder this one's been popular among serious people here.

Here is the interior...about half there only maybe a bit more...Second shot shows the inside view of entry hole.Funny thing is whatever hit it was so fast no paint was lost at entry point...Paint has curled around where it went in and has a Neat Crazeing effect that Is only visable in person

Looks like blood on the liner which probably caused the liner to deteriorate.
