I saw this today. He said he got it along time ago from his neighbor who was a major. He was askinh $1450. The blade is rough. What do you guys think about originality and price??

My gut tells me this is a good dagger.
No not in great shape but Wingen is a rare find.
The scabbard is a repaint maybe?
Regardless $1450, I think is a good buy.

The scabbard appeared to be anodized. It just didn't photo well.

I like it too, it appears to match the one I have.

As Paul mentioned, the scabbard looks like it may have been re-done.

The price is good... it's worth a lot more than the asking price, due to a fair amount of Rohm's name showing.

What would you guys do about the cosmoline on the blade? I tried WD40 then finally used simichrome on my J P Sauer but I dont want damage the burnishing of the inscriptions.

Oh ya..as far as the scabbard being repainted, the seller in his mid 80's. He was a paratrooper and entered the war just after the budlge. I mention this because I think he is too old to rework daggers.

Wipe off as much as possible using paper towels. Then use some acetone to clear the rest of it off... in the house, commonly known as, "nail polish remover". Should do the trick.

I forgot to mention that I also tried acetone on the Sauer but it didnt work at all. Maybe becasue the Sauer was caked though. Will the acetone hurt the burnishing??

Bob the acetone won't hurt the burnish. Try laying some paper towel in the blade and then soaking the paper with acetone. This stuff evoporates in seconds, (that's why it feels so cold). It needs to soak in to work right. Be patient. If the cosmoline does not soften it's not cosmoline. Lastly do not let acetone touch the grip. This is not a job to rush.

Whoops One other thing. If your etching is painted do not do this, I doubt the paint would survive.

How do I tell if its burnishing or paint? One I did notice is that the Rohm etch doesn't feel as deep as the obverse etch???

In my few years of collecting this is the only partial Rohm I have handled. I did see a Pack full Rohm which I posted in this section

If you're going to use acetone put the dagger and paper towels into a zip lock plastic bag to slow down the evaporation.

Bob, you can pretty much tell cause the black paint is either black or not, there are no shades of gray. Do a search for a Heller with the anchor trademark or a Malsh & Ambronn, those are 2 guys I know painted their motto's. When the paint comes off it often peels and most often where the runners have rubbed.
One sure test is to use acetone. If the motto comes off you will know it was paint!! :>

IMHO the Wingen you show is burnished.
Lastly the more time I spend in this hobby the less I do to these things.
If ever there is ANY doubt do nothing!!

Oh yea, burnish always has a "matte" finish, moreso than paint. Lastly don't do this at the walnut dining room table!!!

Yes... buy it!

Even just for a financial gain... it's WORTH A LOT MORE than the current price tag.

So I call the guy to go buy it and he tells me he is going up in price. I said sir you were going to sell it to me yesterday for $1450 I told you I was interested and I wanted to get the inscription checked, I could have bought yesterday for $1,450 and today to you want more money????
