Hi guys,
I recently acquired a Browning hi-power holster that has a name and a five digit serial number inked inside the flap. Did all German soldiers have serial #'s or just members of the SS? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks & best regards,
Len

Hi Steve,
I don't know about the German serial numbers, but I've seen literally dozens of pistol/holster rigs with a name & serial number in the holster. I think all of them were put there by GI's to keep their souvenier from being stolen. It seems to have been common practice. Hope this helps....

Hi Denny,
Thanks for your input. I've also seen may share of GI marked holsters & bayonet frogs but I think this inscription might be by a German. The style of the handwritting and the horizontal slash through the number 7 (center digit) ,I think, point to a a German source.Sorry for the poor quality pic.

Best regards,
Len

I agree with your conclusion Len. Sorry I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it.

Hi Len:

Checked the SS name index in the National Archives this week and found two Shalko's (no Shalka's). I examined their records and neither one had a SS number matching (or even coming close to) that on the holster.

As a follow up, one of the Shalko's was a SS officer. The number could be that of his feldpost which often look like SS numbers. More research could be done.
