Does anyone have opinions:

I. Wagner versus J. Wagner and "loth" versus "lotig" silver content for the issue EK1 1870 EKs?

This is an area full of landmines.

Come on and give your opinions!!!!!

Well as usual I am wayyy over my head.

Would Johann Wagner be spelled "I. Wagner" in OLD GERMAN? If that is so... would it also follow that "loth" would be spelled "lotig" to be consistant with the OLD german alphabet?

I have looked at the german alphabets on the net and wow I am really confused!!!

HELP!!!

Sometimes the J looks like an I. And I think they varied in the lotig/loth thing. But I would (myself) never buy an 1870 ek1 unless I was buying from an expert with return, or only paying the price of a very nice repro. 1870s are deadly scary- one guy in Germany (who specialized) told me he would only buy from a big dealer now, and even then he'd be doubt-filled.

Rod,

I have to agree with Lance, this is an extremely difficult area in my opinion, too.

I wouldn't want to dissuade you from adding one to your collection but do take care and don't rush into anything - take your time and familiarize yourself thoroughly before jumping into anything... Did you read Previtera's book?
I'd study that forewards and backwards for a good long while. Maybe it'd be a good idea to set your sights on next year's MAX, that'd give you plenty of time to study up and talk to several knowledgeable collectors in the meanwhile..?

Take your time, it'll pay off in the long run.

Best!

This item is from Previtera's private collection. See the bottom of page 113 of his book The Iron Time for this exact same one. I have talked to Steve and he dubs it as a real one. I have a solid paper trail from Steve to me.

There is some disagreement on the other forums. Detlev is not happy with it. I just want to know what someone on here might say.

In any event it is mine and I am happy.

I am just curious about the various german spelling manners.

I would state that it will take much study to resolve the variables under question and at the moment from reading what is out there Wink I see no light of consensus at the end of any tunnel.
Rod, I look forward to seeing detailed images of your cross.
I do not own the reference book.

Has there ever been a silver content test done on your cross?

I really do thank you for your response but I would rather not post pics. Discussion with the experts has knocked me around a bit and I prefer not to duplicate that again. In the end it is my opinion that is important (to me).

In order to keep my query on track I would like to limit it to the old versus modern german alphabet.

i.e................. "i" versus "j" and "loth" versus "lotig".

No, I have not had the silver content tested. It is marked "14 Lotig" which indicates .875 based on 14/16 for pure silver.

I once saw about 4 variations of 1870 ek1 for sale on a German auction site. All looked incredible with different variations of pinback and maker. The prices were about 300-500 Eur, and they were all listed as reproduction. That really did it for me as I could not tell the difference between these and the ones in The Iron Time.

Rod- maybe you should post in the language forum. Or maybe query 'Wotan' directly as he may know.
