I have never seen one in person, it looks GREAT!! I will be interested to hear what more experienced collectors think of its originality... If it is bad then someone really did a masterful job woth the grip! The eagle fits VERY nicely even having the head cut out. And the way that the grip fits the upper and lower fittings looks quite nice too. This has my attention... Fascinating!

These are very rare birds to say the least. Tom Wittman showed me two of them that he had and both were fakes according to him. If I remember correctly he said they used cap eagles. If it is authentic congrats on a nearly impossible dagger to find..

I am not familiar with this particular grip eagle type. But looking at the makers logo, it looks good to me. What do you guys think? -wagner-

That dagger was on "militariaweb" a while back. I have exchanged emails with Jochen and, as I told him, the dagger is unfortunately in my opinion a reworked normal early EP&S dagger. Two major red flags are: - Gau mark. The earliest daggers did NOT have them. They were essentially prototypes given as gift to the top SA guys. - Placement of the trademark. It should be much closer to the crossguards. These fake "pointy wing" daggers have been appearing in Europe for about 4 years. The one above is the best one I have seen so far, but is still lacking in several details. Dave PS - Thanks JR

When you have handled a period early logo SA, there is no doubt in your mind. And this isn't one of them.

The grip doesn't look right to me either, but I would like to see the top and bottom of the grip openings when taken down. If it is a fake, the fakers know that EP&S frequently has a red stained grip.

I am not going to comment on the originality of this dagger other than to say that the handle looks good and the eagle is a perfect fit. It could be a lapel eagle but a cap eagle would be too large to fit this grip IMO.The overall quality is certainly there. In so far as Tom Ws assessment, I have sold to Tom and have purchased from him. Although I like him he is far from perfect and has been known to make a few mistakes. Such has been my experience. cheers, Ryan

Barker- I am no expert, but I don't like the grip on yours. It looks mis-shapen and the fit to the crossguard (last pic.) is off. Do you have any pics. of the motto or a close-up of the makers mark??? But ofcourse I may be wrong - JMO It is interesting however that there are now 2 of these by the saem maker, with VERY similar wood grain, etc...

Hello Johnny, The grip is not as perfect as the later mass produced daggers, these were each custom made. I would worry about one that looked perfect. The crossguards are also made differently, look closely. And unlike the Eickhorn early "A" daggers all I have seen were ground Rohms.

Barker- You are probably correct, I have little knowledge of these very early pieces. Congrats on what appears to be a very rare find!

I am fortunate to have one the these early daggers and also, as Dave H. knows, I have an extra early grip eagle. Neither one of my eagles looks like the first dagger in this thread and mine have the prongs on the reverse, much like the second pattern eagle. Ron Weinand Weinand Militaria
