Don, those postings are absolutely the best! Since I'm somewhat of a document collector, I have to say those Dienstausweis are amazing and that uniform picture on Sohst's example is WOW! I need to find one someday!!! Such stunning & rare material! Thanks for sharing!

Don, now that is amazing, three cards for the same individual!!! How rare is that?? Have you seen many sets of ID's for the same individual? Were they issued annually? Those are fantastic and thanks for sharing!

Dave,
All Gestapo and Kripo Dienstausweise are very rare. These multiple cards to one person should never have existed as it was against Himmler's regulations for an officer to keep a no longer valid police ID card for the Kripo or Gestapo. They were supposed to be turned in to be destroyed.

I think the combination of the fact that Walter Sohst was a high ranking officer and that he had been in three different sections of the non-uniformed police (Gestapo) (Gestapo training instructor) and (State Kripo) and was in different locations made it possible for him to keep all three cards.

The cards were found hidden with his moth-eaten shoulder boards and two 1945 tram tickets, hidden in a false wall of what was probably his former office in the Skoda Werke headquarters building, when it was being remodled for a Prague City office building.

Sohst, having health problems and being a trained engineer, was transferred to the Skoda munitions operation, taking him out of Germany into the Protektorate.

Full color pictures and the story of this discovery can be found in the September/October issue of "THE ARMOURER", a British militaria collectors magazine. Back issues can be ordered at editor.armourer@btinternet.com

Walter Sohst spent ten years as a prisoner in Czech prisons from 1945 to 1955. These are his hidden shoulderboards.

Hi Don,

Many thanks for the additional information and most intriguing story! What a fortunate and likely one-of-a-kind find! Are all of Sohst's effect shown now in your possession? Those shoulder straps are really something! Now I'll have to go order a back issue to read the full story since you got my interests peaked here! Nothing like these sort of story's to get the collecting blood flowing!

This is all the Sohst material except the worker's handbook in which the pieces had been placed inside an envelope from an electrical company in Prag. I am posting the handbook.
There was an extensive file on Sohst in the Berlin Document Center, and recently declassified CIA files on him in the U.S. National archives. It is an interesting story of how he survived the war, prison and returned to Germany in 1955. I was fortunate to acquire the grouping and I did the research on him.

Below is a portion of a rather extensive paper/photo grouping attributed to Major d. Schutzpolizei Wilhelm Kleibaum. in the grouping, there are 5 photo albums with approximately 1,500 photos that closely follow his career. I was also fortunate enough to obtain his promotion and award documents, his medals w/cases, ribbon bars and his dog tag.
