I have been after an SA High leaders dagger for some time now, I wanted one with original leather and some gold remaining on the dedidication. I picked it up yesterday and am really pleased with it.

But am broke for a bit now Frown

Picked up you say Wink For most collectors this is what dreams are made. Congrats on an exceptional acquisition, you are a lucky man indeed. I was wondering, do you have any "ordinary" daggers in your collection?

Including this I only have 4 SAs/NSKKs all a little special Smile

But I did sell all my SAs sime time back as I wanted to focus on SS stuff and a few more advanced pieces.

I only have a small collection of stuff though but do have a few nice bits now!

I wanted the small double oval trademark one. I have been excited for weeks about getting it, I do really appreciate it and I know its a valuable and wonderful thing to own.

I have always felt that once you get an SA Damascus Honor your collection goes to another level.
I am still trying to get to the higher level and need the SS Honor and the Feldherrnhalle
I have the Army and the Honor Navy, so a little over half way there an still have my reuglar daggers. I don't think I am going to make it all the way, however.

Very nice. I am also wondering if i should move to another level.Do what you have done and move up a gear. I have over 120 SA/NSKK daggers alone and I am thinking it might be time to downsize, keep a few goodies and pass the others on to collectors.

When I see such workmanship as displayed here it reinforces the concept.

Nice buy!!

Spock

I love SAs I think I had about 40 of them, but really how much do you REALLY enjoy each and every one. Mine never got to see the light of day, I had maybe 4-5 really good ones that I looked at now and then.

One day I sat down with all my SAs, Lufts, and Heers, Kms and did a first sort out. I decided to keep ten of the ones that I felt attached to. The rest I PXd for SS Daggers or sold. With the money I also bought two lovely SAs in the Johnson book. When they were delivered I looked at those, then decided to sell the last ten normal SAs I had held on to.

The way I think of it is I love SAs but you will always be able to buy them. This higher end stuff is much harder to find but gives you a lot of joy!.

I dont have a lot of stuff maybe just 10-12 pieces but I really enjoy my collection far more now.

I still want a Himmler and an SA Rohm like the one Gailen just sold... but they will come. So I guess it just depends on what floats your boat!!

Better get your SA Full Rohms now as most are beaters and the nice ones like Gailen sold are VERY hard to come by. Glad I got mine when the market was soft on these, once Toms book comes out it will only help lock these into collections, thus they will rarely come out. In the past 7 years or so I have only seen 3 or 4 NM examples.....

Not sure what a SS Honor dagger sells for.... I am sure they are not cheap.

Love the Patina on the Dagger! Mint ones are nice, but nothing beats a Nice Patina without Damage IMO. I would sell half my dagger collection for one like that - Well done!

for the past 5 years there is a talk about this mistical book of Toms. The prices on daggers and collectible guns are falling as well as prices on houses. So I do not think that a book will help much to boost the prices up.

Hello Mongobongo,

Just arrived from vacation and I just saw your thread.
This is a stunning piece and would be the center piece of any advanced collection.
I'm glad that you were able to get one and at a "fair" price at that and right in the UK. Wink

Congrats !

They usually go from anywhere between $ 135,000 USD and $ 150,000 USD. However, with the economic crisis we're experiencing at the moment, it may prove to be a bit of a hard sell IMO.

Pat:

But, in hindsight, probably holding their own better than houses in most regions of our two countries.

Pat, the two countries are Canada and USA, not Canada and Quebec Big Grin Big Grin

But, like houses, when it comes time to sell, one needs to find a willing buyer.

Mongo: It is great to see that your fantastic dagger has found a loving home. Congratulations.

take a look at this High Leader SA on a Russian Web side. The price is 43 grands. Any opinions apart that is not worth that money?

A few little things come to mind here for me, I own one but am no experet. I would say they are more general observations.

1. The leather does not look like mine, maybe it has been re covered or perhaps it is different on the later ones?.
2. The connecting chain from the scabbard has two big rings, on the few examples of the later Eickhorn ones I have seen they normally just have one big ring before it connects to the little chain loops but I have not seen pictures with this trademark on.
3. Not very sure what has been going on with the blade where it meets the lower crossguard seems to curve in for some reason.
4. Poor grip fit but the shape seems right so it is probably just shrinkage.
5. makers mark, I cant remember off hand if they made these with that trade mark? normally they are small double oval or over the shoulder Eickhorn. At work and without looking in the books I just cant remember!.
6. On the crossguards on mine the detail is slightly worse on the reverse, this has been caused by rubbing during normal wear. On this example it is the same both sides.

Ask for some internal pics of the crossguards tang and grip.

I noticed that another auction of daggers by this company has one of the RARE SA Honor Daggers by Horster. From the photos, it appears to be a great REAL one and compares to the other known examples of this type.

PS: has anyone ever done business with this company?

What this one http://ww2.ru/store/element.ph...167&ELEMENT_ID=18432

Can you make out who it was given to on the blade, the one in the Johnson book is ground out.

If you click on the photo, it becomes larger and you can read the man's name and at the end of the ribbon you can see the SA unit. It would be a researchable piece.
For those who have my Waffenleite NPEA Book, in the presentation section you can see the same style honor crossguards on the Horster presentation NPEAs I show detail photos of in my work.

The reaserch was done on the piece and completed. They know the original owner and his full life story. It is all in Russian on the website. I have never done any business with them to have an opinion. The prices are in my opinion are outrageous on the pieces they show.
the knife belonged to Oberguppefurer Guttenberger. I may spell it incorrectly.

Mongo,
I would walk away from that dagger and not look back.

When ever you have a dagger when the exterior is nice but the blade looks rough, look for other signs to see if it's a possible replacement.
Whooaa.. Sure looks like it has been played with big time to me. Got a parts dagger. No "Hands On" needed. Honor dagger shows "air" on both sides of the crossguard and blade base. Roll Eyes

Best of the Hunters Luck,

serge

I like the "standard" High leaders dagger. I am not real sure about the other one. Looks like it was re-painted. It would need some hands on time IMO.

Serge im not buying it Confused it will be some time before I can do any spending after the last few months, and its not really my cup of tea!.

I dont know if the piece shown is right or wrong but the blade to crossguard fits on a lot of the honour/high leader stuff is not that great. I have been told by a number of collectors that it is not that unusual see a bit of sunlight through them!.

Can anyone who collects these advanced pieces confirm that a lot of them dont have the best fitting blades?
