Didn't even know I had it. It has a little chip in the grip so I had tossed it in the junkbox years ago. Couldn't find any reference to this maker mark so it just may be fake. Who knows.

That little gismo underneath the H looks like a handicapped parking sticker. Maybe the blade was made by some project for rehabilitation of the disabled. You suppose?

Maybe a version of this one??

Herbertz & Meurer, Solingen-Grafrath.

I think this one is from an SA.

Russell

The H and M design is similar if not identical to the design used in the Herbert and Meurer TM. The squiggle could be the "&". If this is the case then that is one rare dagger you have. Congrats.

Swirlng on the scabbard doesn't make it a fake. Manfred it would be nice if we could see some more pictures of the dagger crossguard and fittings etc.

Agree that swirling doesn't absolutely mean fake. It's a good indication, but not an absolute.

But on to the posted dagger, I believe that mark is a fake Manfred. Sorry.

NICE

I saw one of these last year at a Local flea...almost bought it for $150 and could not pull the trigger...it looked REAL good from 5 feet and not so bad in hand...does this one have the added scabbard tip,the one I saw did and it feels really tacky in hand due to the fresh laquer.

The scabbard is steel and doesn't have an add-on tip. The crossguard and the pommel are the generic types, the crossguard being the type I. The grip is galalith.

BTW: Does anyone have the new Johnson 4-volume dagger series. If so, take a look at vol.I, page 70.

Just a thought, Turn the motto 180 degrees, instead of an "M" over "H" could this be an "H" over "W"?

The flat on the center of the blade looks kind of wide.

This blade looks identical to one which I unfortunately got caught with (the perils of internet scammers)some time ago, except that this one is on a heer daggernot a 2nd luft. Central plane of the blade was somewhat wide with slightly rounded edges. Other than that, very convincing when assembled into a dagger. Made in spain. Bless them.

Mine looked good & the repro fittings were scarily authentic until you got it in the hand. Very heavy & made the whole thing unbalanced.

Crafty monkeys (read something defamatory) too to use a MM that is so uncommon.

Manfred I`m not stating that yours is the same type blade, just an observation that it looks very similar.

dI would be convinced of the critiques if anyone could explain the dagger shown in Johnson's reference.
All the blades made in Spain were affixed with the original trademarks, thus, there had to be an original blade that they copied.

Scabbard & fittings will give the spanish copies away the moment you get them in your hand. Believe me you would know. I have seen what I believe was an original H&M but I cannot remember where now.

just found a simular dagger for sale in Belgium.it caught my eye due to the strange maker mark, unkown to me.
I only have 4 pics but they do not look that alarming to me.
If it's a copy (most likely i guess) then it's pretty nice.

H & M (Herbertz & Meurer) are a known maker but their blades are few & far between.
the pictures that you have provided are not sufficiently detailed to comment on the dagger fittings/scabbard but that blade is not good IMO

Look at the width of the central plane. On original daggers they can vary slightly but not by that much.

Could be someone had an original rat blade that they switched with this one? I think they are spanish repro`s. I got burned on an auction a long time ago with a H & M luft before I knew much of anything. They do look good from a distance but that is as far as it goes. the luft fittings were so heavy that the darn thing hung up side down! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Repro from top to bottom!

Same dagger......different FAKE maker. Notice the selective cropped picture of the blade tang. Very sly from the seller who obviously knows this is not period.

I'm not sure that the seller has done that on porpose, since it's for sale for a very low price at the moment is stands at 50 bucks .
And he also has a costoms dagger for sale by Holler which is an obvious fake.
