My buddy Rick needs a bridge over Dog Canyon for his 1/16th Pershing and Sherman. No doubt as an escape route from the Tigers. Big Grin Big Grin

This is Dog Canyon.

I'm going to build him a bridge.

The bridge has to be 18 inches wide, 54 inches long with supports to span Dog Canyon.

The first step is to make the planks. I've got some 1x4 boards that I was going to cut up for light wood to start my fireplace when it gets down to 30 below this winter. Now I guess we'll freeze. Roll Eyes

Wow Bernie, I've been workin' for the Santa union the past few days and need to catch up around here and all I can say is WOW! Thanks so much for helping us with this crazy idea, looking forward to doing the field installation. We'll add photos to this thread all the way through to the ribbon cutting! Smile

Now some of you out there might think we have too much time on our hands but this is all in the name of fun! You see I decided to do what my Great Grandfather did with his backyard, he built a "Garden Railroad" back before WW II.

We're going to do some re-landscaping of the backyard going into Spring time and have decided to do something similar for our R/C tanks. A series of dirt roads (and bridges) will be constructed so the tanks can reach all corners of the yard. We've already constructed one all weather road which has survived both the elements and the hound dogs so we have our road constrution method worked out.

Nothin' but fun! Big Grin

Rick Cool

P.S. For some strange reason I feel like another set of Tiger tracks are heading my way! Roll Eyes

Hey Rick. How about a thread on the "Dog Canyon Battlefield" project. It would be interesting to see "before and after" pics of the project.

I'm consulting my crystal ball and yes, you're right. There is another set of Tiger tracks in your future. Eek

Wait a minute.... I see more than tracks... Big Grin

Bernie, that is a fantastic looking bridge. When I was a kid I used to build models all the time but haven't touched one in years. After looking at all of the great work you, Rick Turner and others have posted You guys have inspired me to get back into it.
Since my main focus in collecting is Luftwaffe I will concentrate of Aircraft. I was raised around Aircraft (military brat) and I work for Bell Helicopter so I know the ins and outs them.

I have learned some great tips from reading post on this forum and seeing the effects on models I am anxious to get started. I bought an air brush and other supplies and I am ready to go. I have a "test" ME-109 that will serve as a building block and learning curve with all the effects and wear Aircraft endure.

If anyone has any tips or hints to shorten that learning curve I would appreciate any and all advice.

Aha..... now it looks like a very strong 24" high column to support two spans of a wooden bridge over Dog Canyon. Cool

Four support beams of 5/8" poplar are reinforced with 3/8" cross members. The bottom 4 inches will be buried so I cheated and added a 2 inch screw into the reinforcing beam that spans the 4 supporting beams.

One down, one to go.

Now for the weathering.

Man oh man, don't cut yourself short Bernie, your artistic talent is in your scale model building.
I can see something going that will make all of our eyes pop out with the completed project of man, bridge and machine. Machine being a Tiger.

The Dog Canyon Bridge is finished. Cool

As model bridges go, this is a big one! I laid it out in my workshop and had trouble getting it set up so that I could take pictures of the whole span.

There are a few small errors in it that only us trained bridge engineers could spot. Big Grin But it won't interfere with its strength.

Please forgive the "trusses" at each end. Being 24 inches high, I had to find something that could hold up each end. The only "truss" I could find for the right span was made out of toilet paper. Big Grin Big Grin

With the size restriction on uploading pics, I hosted these on ImageShack to try and give you the sense of the size of Dog Canyon Bridge.

I love it Bernie! You went at that project with a fury and unbridled passion. I wish I had your enthusiasm. Only thing is I was thinking you have the start of one heck of a "working diorama" for your Tiger now. Are you sure you are going to be able to part with it when the time comes? Big Grin! JohnJ

Thanks John,

Good point. As I was building it, I kept telling myself that this was pretty cool. I'd never built a bridge before so did some research on the net and modelled it off a bridge found in a 1/6th diorama created by Vince Abbot and his friends over in the UK.

And yes, the thought crossed my mind that I could abscond with it and head off to Mexico with it under one arm and my Tiger under another. Big Grin Big Grin

But I gave my word to my buddy Rick and my word is my bond. Wink It will be heading off to the Republic of Kalifornia as soon as I can find a box big enough. Eek

Anyway, I'm already researching my next bridge project. Cool

Beautiful job Bernie, the only difficulity I can spot is at the end of the bridge. The Tiger may sink a little when it hits the Charmin. But no matter, Charmin or Sherman is not much of a match for a Tiger. Plus the Charmin will wipe up the tracks. Big Grin
Great work.

Wow Bud! That's better than Hollywood! Great, great job. Man, I am truly blessed to have such a great friend, cohort (in every sense of the word) and model buddy in Bernie. Thank you very much my friend. Big Grin

Once the bridge arrives I’ll start a new thread covering its installation and some of the other things we’ll be adding to the “yard”. I’m currently kicking around the idea of making “Dragon’s teeth” out of old deep sea fishing weights. Roll Eyes

Dog Canyon Bridge is boxed up and ready to go. Its fate now rests in the hands of Canada Post and USPS. God speed...

Dragon's teeth. Now that's something I have also been pondering. Haven't come up with any ideas yet so a thread on making those would be most welcome Rick.
