When you look in Wayne's great book, German Etched Dress Bayonets, you will find several versions of the infantry etch produced by E Pack and called by them pattern No 6.

I will show you pictures of my latest Pack No 6 with a couple of unique features.

The Reverse Etch (a unique feature of this bayonet.. you will see this on pages 65 and 146 bottom)... dedicated to Kurt Jung of the 61st Infantry Regiment and dated 1938.

I will pause for a few minutes to let the system rest so that I can post some interesting variations on the No 6 etch.

Here are three different versions of the No 6 etch.

The top one is the above pictured presented bayonet, with oak leaves by soldier's feet and with what I call a double scalloped bookend (pages 65 & 146 bottom).

The middle bayonet is double etched, stag gripped bayo with oak leaves and with what I call the straight edged bookend (page 146 top).

The bottom bayonet is the one found in the catalog and has no oak leaves and has a single scalloped bookend (page 144).

Here is the soldier with no oak leaves (bottom bayonet):

The middle bayonet sees the soldier with oak leaves at his feet:

And this one is from the presented bayo with the same oak leaves at the soldier's feet:

The no oak leaf version of the bayonet has the bookend seen in the catalog and on page 144.. curved bookend with a single scallop in the curve:

The middle bayonet has oak leaves and has the straight edged bookend seen at the top of page 146:

Oops, let's try the straight edged bookend instead...

And the top bayonet has the oak leaves and a double scalloped bookend, similar to the one at the bottom, but with two rounded scallops, instead of the one:

On page 145, you can see a fourth variation of this No 6 etch.. oak leaves at the feet and a single scalloped bookend that is identical to the one found on the no oak leaf version.

Very interesting, wouldn't you think?

I wonder if it is possible to find the straight edged bookend on the no oak version?

If anyone out there has the version on page 145 or any other version of the No 6, I would love to see pictures posted here.

Beautiful piece & an interesting addition to your wall! The gilted lettering is really a super sight to behold. Also, an excellent reference on Pack pattern #6 Infantry variations.

John, I assume that your blade is natural finished and not plated. Makes me wonder if these named, unit designated Pack pieces were special and left natural?
Also, you might point out to Wayne the date on the blade and the Pack style TM. As I remember, Wayne thought these were all war time manufactured instead of early as I always claimed.

Thanks for posting all the nice photos. Its great to see what I can't aford. I love the side by side comparisons. John, you do realize that there is no end to this maddnes.

It would be correct to say that you remember INCORRECTLY...The version of Pack etch we were discussing were the OVAL series! MOST of the OVAL series had the large Sigfried Waffen trademark, SOME had the smaller Pack trademark.
The type of Pack trademark itself does not automatically tell the viewer what years the etch was produced as Pack seems to have used many trademarks throughout the Third Reich period. It's not like Eickhorn who used a certain trademark for a couple of years then went to another.

Reverse

Wayne, I am not remembering incorrectly. My contention was that the natural finished blades were special ordered and, oval or not, were not availabe during the war regardless of which TM was used.
It is obvious that Pack used different TMs during the TR and this can be easily seen in the ones they used on the HJ Knives.
I am still convinced that these unit marked and named pieces were pre war as is seen in this 1938 dated piece shown by John Z.

My overall sense of the scheme of things is that the unit marked blades, and special order examples were prewar also. As Germany began its mobilization process units were created, shuffled around, renamed etc. Service terms were extended, reserves called up etc. etc. The certainty of a fixed term of service, and with a specific unit, was not a realistic expectation for the average soldier.

By September 1, 1939 when the actual shooting war began it only accelerated the process. With by early 1942, Solingen blade makers terminating series production of even the oftentimes lesser quality actual wartime period dress bayonets. FP

My last purchase of 2009, but the first to arrive in 2010 is a long Pioniere hilted No 6 Infantry etch, with a reverse dedication.

On thing is for sure, they sure are good looking. The picture with the comparison of the three etches is my favorite. It shows a different border at the tip in all cases. I'm, at this stage, not focused (or frankly, much interested) in dress bayos, but I like these pieces.
