Hi All, What kind of sword / bayonet is this? It is very similar to a Colt revolving bayonet I had a few weeks ago. It has a wood handle and looks almost confederate to me but I am not sure. Minus the paint its nice! Help Please!!! Bill Rannow Minneapolis Minnesota Fine Japanese Swords & Antiques www.artswords.com AND Quality WWII German Militaria www.collectorsmilitaria.com

Hello.
What you have is a British first Pattern 1859 naval cutlass bayonet. The first pattern, using wooden grips with 6 vertical grooves (some have been found covered with leather) are much more scarce than the 2nd pattern, which uses pressed leather grips with the typical checkered pattern.
That said, MANY fakes have been made of these bayos, and unless you are able to find some inspection markings on it somewhere, it's suspect (in my opinion at any rate). I know that 1st pattern repros came out of India, and are usually stamped "INDIA" on the ricasso. Some very well made fakes, using the Bleckman marking BM inside a bow and arrow, are also around, although I believe they only faked the 2nd patterns.
I hope this helps at least a little bit!
Here's to those who make what we collect worth collecting.

Hi, Thanks for the info. It is real there are inspection marks on it. It is from a GAR the paint is a dead giveaway. Do you know what are they worth? In British pounds it has a retail value of around 300. The paint will lower the value a little.
I would ask around $300 - $340
