Gentlemen, Some of you may remember some time back that I was thinking about building a display case. I kind of started a little of it at the end of February. I was tracking down acrylic on the Net. Thought I would share a few pics of the halfway point. I still need to enclose it and am thinking about adding LED lights to the inside. They don't run as hot and I may see if I can wire them to a dimmer switch so I can vary the amount of light. Hope you enjoy and if you have any comments, please add to this thread; you may give me a new idea. These are in no specific order at the moment. I still need to go and see what I have hanging on the wall yet to see what will eventually go in the finished case. It will hold 33 bayos.
Regards, Steve

Steve,
This is super work. The display is quite impressive looking & as George says, it's a very clean look to it. I suspect you could corner the market on a small cottage industry of your own with just the collectors here.

Billy, I knew it wouldn't take you long to spot that I didn't have an FW in the bunch. I only have a dozen or so of those. They're getting too hard to find. I think you cornered the market on those When it comes to the acrylic hangers I made, I cut the rounded edges with a scroll saw as well as the slit for the blade. Then a lot of handwork with some sandpaper, evenly applied. There's got to be a faster way to make these where they would be profitable to make. I still haven't decided how I want to build the frame. When I finish, I will post pics of the end result. A picture for fellow collectors follows. Yes, Billy, the FW will fit if you do a little handwork with a notch for the crossguard. It will accept the K98s and almost a police bayonet. It just needs a little more adjustment in the blade cutout. I think it could be versatile to SA and SS daggers, possibly.

Steven:
That is an amazing collection and beautifully displayed. I still have to figure out what to do with mine, but yours is a great example to me of how to do it right.
How about showing some pics of those fantastic looking KS98s, I like to see etches.

Wow, a truly beautiful collection indeed. What's also great is the very good condition of the pieces displayed and the variety. If I want my collection to grow, your size would define that growth best. Congrats and keep it up! JAN

Very nice display. I think that if you experiment a bit with some scrap Lucite you will find that judicious application of a butane or propane torch flame will clear up the frosted edges of your hangers and make them more transparent.

John and Jan, There are some etches in there, as well as many other types. I do a little bit of everything. There are some jeweler monogram pieces, various types of unit marks of different branches, grip ciphers, as well as pioneers. I have about close to three dozen others that I need to go through and see what will eventually go in the finished case. Chief, I joined the acrylic with a product called Weld-On. It's a very thin clear solvent type of glue that will slightly melt the pieces together. It is for acrylic and it bonds harder with time. Larry, I had heard of a butane type trick to take the frosted look away. I wish I'd had the frosted look to start with. I had to remove a lot of the rough saw marks with sandpaper because I had to cut to fit. I may do the butane thing later. When I finish it, if anyone's interested in what I decide goes in, I could post a list of piece, type and trademark. It will be a couple of months before I have that set up because I have other things to do around the house and do a little of this at a time. Kind regards and thank you all for the kind words and encouragement. Steven P.S.: Anyone who wants to work with this type of material, feel free to get with me. I can tell you things that you can do to work it and some better ways and definitely what not to do

Very nice display! I think it would be much better (safer) if your hangers were one piece. Plexi glass/lucite can be heated & bent. When cool it will safely hold it's new shape. I do not trust any glue to hold the weight. Most epoxies & especially crazy glue will at some unpredictible time let loose. One or two screws or clear plexi posts/dowels would be an improvement too. You can add posts after your two pieces/sections are glued and dried.

I think George's book is a great work on bayonets, particularly dress models. You're in for at least a few good hours of reading.

Billy, I do believe it was you who suggested this book to me in an earlier thread , I am really looking forward to reading this book , i have many books that will show 1 pic of a particular piece such as "this is a heer dagger ,they can have yellow or white handles", which worked for me at the time ,but as you get more and more into this great hobby you need a good reference book to hand , i'm very keen to arm myself with good info on etched dress bayos as that is what i'm looking for next Kindest Regards, Will.

If you haven't yet heard about it and want to get into etched bayonets, THE reference book to get is Wayne Techet's German Etched Dress Bayonets.

Will,
Dress bayonets have long been the red-headed stepchildren of the edged weapons community but I think that is changing in recent years. There is really a scarcity of decent books specifically dealing with the dress variety of bayonets but there are still a few that can help.
George Wheeler's "Seitengewehr" is not only filled with good pictures, there's plenty of text to help guide you.
Gary Walker & Ron Weinand's "German Clamshells & Other Bayonets" although dated (1986?) is still a great reference with plenty of variations, especially of the Polizei types.
Wayne Techet's book "German Etched Dress Bayonets, Extra Seitengewehre, 1933-1945" is really THE book to have if you have any interest in etched bayonets. I bought this book through the BCN when it was originally available even though I had no interest in etched bayonets at that time. I'm glad I did, it's filled with lots of great minutiae about bayonets in general. Also there's plenty of information on the connections between the various Solingen manufacturers who bought & sold products between themselves. The whole subject matter is very addictive indeed.

Will, Actually I've picked up quite a few really nice pieces in the last 4 or 5 months but haven't had a chance to photograph any of them, incuding a beautiful Hörster variation that I've never seen on a fire bayonet previously. Lots of work & family stuff going on has taken most of my attention & unfortunately, most of my free time. Another issue, my camera is also an older one & I can't get a new memory card for it, the current one I have will only allow me 10 or 11 pictures at a time. I also, through a silly move on my part, lost a lot of maker mark pictures. Maybe 1/3 of my collection, mostly newer pieces that I had yet to add to the fire bayonet thread. That's why I haven't added much to the thread lately. When things get settled I'll snap a bunch of new shots & post 'em all. At last count I was over 110. A damned sickness this is One really cool piece is a unit marked example with the same marking & number on the frog. As far as I know, no one has identified what "St. Zw." stands for but we have seen the occasional example here & on Eban so they're out there. Someone suggested "Stätten Zweiback" but no one knows for sure yet. I believe you have #36 with this marking, nice work.

Hi Will, those are some nice pieces there, I love the display. I use a simalar way to display my bayonets, although I never put them back in their scabbards once I remove them. Billy, glad to hear you have managed to add some more pieces. I have not added any pieces myself due to a new job taking a lot of my time as well as a new girl. I am definitely on a lookout for a imitation staghorn long dress bayo in a good condition. JAN

nice way to show them off, if you got the space.... question ? where are you storing the scabbards ??? I would be a little worried of the natral elements taking a toll on the blades. Ain't it nice to get motivated , & create a work of art with youre own hands ! thanks for sharing , jeff
