Hi Paul!

Looks like a nice late koto (1570ish) Ko wakizashi(short wakizashi). Not able to tell a whole lot else. Could be a quality piece judging by the mounts and the grooves in the blade though. You have a smudge on your camera lens which is obscuring the pics a bit.

PAUL-
YOUR SWORD IS MOUNTED IN A STYLE OF MOUNTING CALLED AIKUCHI. THIS FORM OF MOUNTING WAS USUALLY WORN WITH A TACHI MOUNT. THE HANDLE ORNAMENTS OR MENUKI ARE A FAMILY CREST COMMON TO THE PROVINCE OF SATSUMA ON THE SOUTHERN JAPANESE ISLAND OF KYUSHU. THIS MON CAME IN MANY VARIATION WITH THE SWASTIKA AS FOUND ON YOUR SWORD AND THE REVERSED STYLE ALSO USED BY THE 3RD REICH. THEY CERTAINLY ARE AN ORIGINAL PART OF THIS MOUNTING. DUE TO THE CONDITION OF THE BLADE, I CAN NOT TELL YOU ANY THING ELSE WITHOUT A HANDS ON EXAMINATION.

I've got to agree with Bob C. here. The swastika was essentially a universal symbol and therefore also found in the Far East. I have a sash around here that's banded with swastikas which I'll post if I can find it since I've been told it's Japanese.
