Now here's an undocumented use for an SA dagger. The picture is captioned "Red Soldier uses German Dagger to cut up bread for German civilians".
And all along you've been thinking that sharpening one of these served no useful purpose! Big Grin
I can't wait to see the following verbage in one of the dealers descriptions:
"Post War modified for bread distribution purposes." Wink

Doug:
I probably should have posted this in the SA forum where more of the members are likely to see it. I just thought it was an interesting picture with a little irony associated with it.

Certainly.
Wasn't trying to take away from the legit historical context with my tongue in cheek remark.

Could be. The point is it's a political dagger being used for the mundane task of bread slicing.

That is the only photo I have ever seen of an SA dagger out of the scabbard, not counting factory shots or publicity

How about the one in the reference book next to a candle? that says something along the lines of 'my service dagger'?

Jim,
You liked my "sewer" story in the other thread, so you might like this one too!
Several years ago, I visited a WWII vet who wanted to show me his souveniers. Amongst several pistols, he had a beautiful Eickhorn Senior Forestry Official's Cutlass. He told me this was now a family heirloom because when he came home and married his girl, they cut the wedding cake with it. Over two decades later, the cutlass was used to cut his daughter's wedding cake. He then showed me pictures of the cake-cutting ceremonies. Pretty cool.... It's probably cut the wedding cakes of a few more generations by now.
At the time, I was more excited about the two dual-tone byf44 P.38's that he had taken from a crate in a bombed out train. They were consecutive serial numbers and never fired. Unfortunately, he wouldn't sell a thing. cry

We probably out to start an "Out-Of-The-Woodwork" thread elsewhere as I just bet there's dozens of interesting stories along these lines that can be related by the membership here.

The photo of the Russian slicing bread is from Der Spiegle's archives. I would be very cautious about using it without permission.

It's news to me as this photo was used without attribution elsewhere. If I had known it was attributed to anyone I would have stated that and cited the source. Are we going to have to go thru this whole utilization of photos for educational purposes without any monetary gain spiel again?
